To teach elapsed time is a difficult thing depending on the child. Some children will grasp the concept immediately and for others it may take time. One thing some teachers do is use word problems using the students' names and situations they are familiar with to talk about how much time has gone by. This was a very difficult thing for my daughter to grasp. She is now in the fifth grade and improving with the help of a few techniques. The most basic one we used was to first find the start time.
